What is 3DM?
3DM is the native file format for Rhinoceros 3D (Rhino), a NURBS-based modeling application. 3DM files store precise NURBS surfaces, curves, meshes, and render materials. The format is based on the open-source openNURBS toolkit.
Why optimize 3DM?
Rhino 3DM files contain mathematical NURBS data that browsers cannot render directly. Optimization tessellates NURBS into efficient triangle meshes, applies meshopt compression, and optimizes textures — making Rhino designs viewable on any device with dramatically smaller file sizes.
What gets optimized?
Trice tessellates NURBS surfaces into triangle meshes, converts to GLB, applies meshopt compression, optimizes textures, and preserves layer structure as GLB hierarchy. Materials are converted to PBR format.

Frequently asked questions
NURBS surfaces are tessellated (converted to triangle meshes) during optimization. The visual appearance is preserved, but the mathematical NURBS representation is replaced with polygons — necessary for web rendering.
Materials are converted to PBR format and optimized. Layer structure is preserved as separate objects in the GLB hierarchy, so you can toggle visibility in Trice Studio.
Results vary. NURBS-to-mesh tessellation changes the data representation entirely. Combined with meshopt compression and texture optimization, expect significant reduction — often 70-90% smaller than the original 3DM.
The optimizer supports 3DM files from Rhino 5 and newer (3DM version 5+). Older versions may not be fully compatible.
